Stendek is a multi-instrumental on-the-fly loop artist. Using a variety of traditional and non-traditional instruments ranging from guitars and a scaled-back drum kit to an ocarina, zils, a bicycle horn, and a zither, Phil layers sound on sound -- live, as you watch -- by playing music into a recording device called a "looper," which plays back instantly what he records on it and lets him record an infinite number of additional layers of sound on top of it.

He started off looping using only an acoustic guitar and a hand drum, but soon progressed to adding more instrumentation piece by piece. With every instrument added, a new window opened up to reveal something new about his influences as a musician: the jazz/funk influence of Larry Coryell can be seen in his electric guitar, his deep adoration of Sonny Boy Williamson sometimes peeks through in his harmonica playing, his love of the James Brown rhythm section is all over his drumming, and the very records he grew up listening to get sampled and scratched on his turntables.
