  3. Ryne Watts blurb in the RFT's Beat Happenings section:
Spotlight compatible: My light blew out the other day. When I went to replace the bulb, I discovered it wasn't a normal 60-watt, but a mysterious Ryne Watts! Further investigation revealed that a Ryne Watts is folksy, earnest and very bright (halogen- and LED-capable). I guess my light went out because it had other places to be, like the Ryne Watts CD-release show at 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, at the Clubhouse (next to 714 Kellykris Court, St. Charles) with the Aquatic Record, Matt Dill and the Floating City's Gareth Schumacher. $2.

a much needed update regarding Ryne Watts & Will Rock For Food III

OH. MY GOD. april? huh? wha happen???

i'll be honest with you: at first i was waiting to update till we heard from ryne on the location of his CD release; then i was waiting to update till we started hearing from more bands about the Will Rock For Food comp; then apparently the old day job reared its ugly head & kept me chained to the telephone for hours at a time, unable to lift even a finger to tap out SOS; & i'll admit that i briefly considered holding out on you till we heard from our potential venue for this year's Will Rock For Food -- but you're right, i'm sorry. enough is enough! the people demand satisfaction, & satisfaction they shall receive!

so in an effort to quell the increasingly angry emails from our formerly adoring public re: news of any & all kinds, i'm surreptitiously writing this from work in an "alt-tab" frenzy of toggling between this notepad file & an excel spreadsheet that contains actual work information about an actual work project that i'm actually working on at work. i bend the rules b/c i love. THERE. I SAID IT.

the big news, of course, is that Ryne Watts' CD, "Sing Till the Daylight Comes," has been recorded, mixed, & mastered, & as caroline, daniel, & the infamous brian potts folded album inserts last night (while i made a disappointing curry), we listened to the master & sang along & YOU GUYS. IT IS SO GOOD. I'M NOT PLAYING AROUND.

"when will the disc be available for purchase?" you cry. why, on april 21 at 7 in the pm! ryne's booked himself at the clubhouse next to 4714 kellykris ct in st charles, & what's really awesome about the Ryne Watts CD Release Extravaganza is that, b/c it's not your standard venue, he can charge a mere TWO DOLLARS to get in. THAT IS A STEAL. also playing that night will be The Aquatic Record, Matt Dill, & Gareth Schumacher (of The Floating City).

furthermore, on the very next friday (04/28), what to our wondering eyes should appear but a motherloving Vintage Vinyl in-store by not one, but TWO MHR artists -- the ever-competitive singer/songwriter tandem pair of ryne & brian, folky & indie, who'll match each other song for song, tattoo for tattoo, swooning girl for swooning girl. what, like i can help it if the boys of MHR are almost as good-looking as us girls? it wasn't intentional, but DAMN is it nice.

& finally, in other (no less exciting, but maybe less time-sensitive) news, there's this annual show we like to do called Will Rock For Food -- perhaps you've heard of it? well, we don't have a date set just yet, but we're in negotiations to determine whether we might institute a change of venues this year. not that we don't love the VFW -- big terry is so generous & awesome, how could we not? -- but sometimes a change is in order. anyway, whether we stay at the VFW or migrate to this as-yet unnamed venue (S is for Secretive), we're looking at a mid- to late-june date. so keep your calendars free, b/c if you're a no-show, THE FOODBANK WILL SUFFER. i'm not gonna suffer! i mean, whatever, you can do what you want -- i just thought you might not want to be responsible for letting the foodbank down, that's all.

& who do we have for the 2k6 comp? oh, i don't know, the first ever live recorded track from a little band i like to call CORBETA CORBATA. the last remaining unreleased song from the late great Commichung. a brand new one from The Monads. a track appropriately called "Empty Stomach" by The Adversary Workers. & promises of tracks from a scandalous number of awesome local bands, including (but absolutely not limited to!): Rats & People, The Vultures, Strawfoot, The Dirty South, The Pubes, The Pat Sajak Assassins, &, of course, the ever-prolific Aquatic Record.

till next time, when, if you're lucky, i'll have an update about some potentially hilarious cover art!

CD release, CD release, rocking for food

thanks one & all for a fantastic turn-out at The Aquatic Record's release show this past friday!! we're working on getting his album to vintage vinyl & euclid records this week, so it should be available for purchase at both locations by the weekend.

in other release-related news, Ryne Watts' debut record is nearing completion at maplewood's own backhouse recording services & is slated for a mid-spring '06 release. i had the privilege of sitting in on a group vocals recording session this past sunday (folding laundry in the control room while ryne & co did their thing) & am practically foaming at the mouth to get this thing out to you, the unwashed (yet 100% brilliant) masses.

singing slightly bitter songs

group vox @ the backhouse, 02/12/06
back - sarah, ray, elliott; front: caroline, matt, tom, ryne, daniel

& finally, it's that time of year again -- the time of year where MHR suits send hundreds of rapidfire emails amongst themselves while brainstorming ideas & artists for this year's Will Rock For Food benefit show. at this early stage in the game, we've made contact with several of st louis' favorite acts, none of which we're at liberty to reveal just yet in an effort to not jinx anything big-time. just know that wheels are turning within wheels -- & wheels within THOSE wheels -- all to ensure that this year's compilation surpasses our already high expectations.

(& yes, before you even ask, i'm spending all of tonight working on taking care of the last two months' worth of photos. so just drop it.)

Local Motion: The Aquatic Record

from this week's Riverfont Times:

Friday, February 10, 8 p.m. at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center (3301 Lemp Avenue)
By Annie Zaleski
Article Published Feb 8, 2006

According to his Maplehood Rekkids hand-scrawled biography, Aquatic Record majordomo Brian Potts likes "beards, ramen and Six Feet Under." It's unclear exactly how these items influence his new CD, When Sitting Silent Gets Too Quiet (except for, uh, the facial hair), but Quiet is actually anything but. Potts' voice vaguely resembles Colin Meloy's pipes (minus the nasal twang), but the album's strident acoustic guitars, stitched-patchwork instrumentation and joyous add-ons (cherubic female vocals, moody piano, handclaps) create charmingly lo-fi indie-rock atmospheres that aren't found very often in St. Louis clubs.

so there you have it. charmingly low-fi indie-rock. SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? get out tonight to the lemp!

oh yeah, & The Monads are opening!

NEWS: 01.11.06

i can't wait any longer!

listen up: i've been waiting & waiting & waiting for our third band to confirm before posting anything about The Aquatic Record's CD release, but enough is enough, people, so here's the deal -- the release show for "When Sitting Silent Gets Too Quiet" is set for 8pm on february 10 at the lemp neighborhood arts center. also playing will be I Like the Future and the Future Likes Me plus one TBA. we've had a couple bands in that TBA slot fall through, but brian's newest choice is a doozie. did i just say "doozie"? damn right i did!!! you'd say it, too, if you knew who i was talking about.

brian's kept backhouse recording services busy in the last month, what with the whole thing he has with writing new songs all the damn time & then recording them to be on the album, then re-recording songs that have been rewritten, then re-recording them again, then adding parts, then adding more parts, then subtracting parts, then adding them back again, etc etc ad infinitum. brian scheffer at tiny apertures will likely have a hell of a time mastering this FIFTEEN (or is it now SIXTEEN?) TRACK MONSTER, but that's why he gets paid the big bucks, right? am i right? yeah, you know i'm right.

it's a good thing everyone's been held to such a strict deadline, or pretty soon we'd be dealing with songs like "Touché," "I Eat Poop Sandwiches B/c I'm Out of Ramen," "Why Does Everyone Hate Me?" "No, Seriously, Why?" "Touché II: Circle Gets the Square," "World's Tiniest Cup with World's Dumbest Dude," & "When I Said This Is the Best Job Ever, What I Meant Was I Never Wanted to Play Music Again."

in other news, Stendek's moving to las vegas again. you know the drill. we were hoping to wring a third album out of him before he left, but now he's made promises to record once he's settled in vegas, so all i can say is that i hope that, at some point in the not-so-distant future, everyone will be able to hear the kind of stuff i've been hearing from the cute little G4 to which he's been chained in his basement.

photos coming from our recent shows at sally t's as soon as i get the disc. i swear.

until next time, hearts & flowers & unicorns & rainbows!
